GMAT Accommodations and Extended Time

By Obafemi Ajayi·April 12, 2026·1,437 words

GMAT Accommodations and Extended Time

TL;DR: GMAC offers extended time, additional breaks, enlarged font, adjustable contrast, readers, recorders, sign language interpreters, and permission for medical devices. You must apply through your mba.com account and receive approval before scheduling a test date. The process is separate from the GRE accommodations process. Approval for one test does not transfer to the other.

If you have a documented disability or health condition, you are not stuck choosing between testing without support and skipping the GMAT. GMAC has a formal accommodations process that covers a wide range of needs. But the process takes time, requires specific documentation, and has to be completed before you book a test date.

This guide covers what is available, how to apply, and how to build a realistic timeline.

What Accommodations Are Available

GMAC evaluates accommodation requests on an individual basis. The types of accommodations that may be granted include:

Additional time. The most commonly requested accommodation. This typically means time and a half or double time on each section. The amount granted depends on your documentation and the recommendation of the evaluating professional.

Additional breaks. Extra break time or additional break periods beyond the single optional 10-minute break included in the standard GMAT Focus Edition format.

Enlarged font. Larger text display for test takers with visual impairments.

Adjustable contrast. Modified screen contrast settings for test takers who need them for visual or neurological reasons.

Reader or recorder. A human reader to read test content aloud, or a recorder to capture your responses. These accommodations require in-person testing at a Pearson VUE test center.

Sign language interpreter. Available for test takers who are deaf or hard of hearing. Covers spoken instructions only, not the test content itself.

Medical devices. Permission to bring and use medical devices (insulin pumps, hearing aids, etc.) during the exam that would otherwise not be allowed in the testing room.

Other accommodations. GMAC considers requests on a case-by-case basis. If your documented need falls outside this list, you can still submit a request describing what you need.

How the GMAT Accommodations Process Works

Step 1: Read the GMAT Supplement

Before you start gathering documentation, read the GMAT Supplement for Test Takers with Disabilities. This document outlines exactly what GMAC requires, what types of documentation are acceptable, and the standards your records need to meet. Skipping this step is how people submit incomplete requests and lose weeks to follow-up correspondence.

Step 2: Create Your mba.com Account

If you do not already have one, create an account at mba.com. Your accommodation request, documentation, and eventual test registration all flow through this account.

Step 3: Gather Documentation

GMAC requires documentation from a qualified professional. The specifics depend on the type of disability:

  • Learning disabilities (dyslexia, dyscalculia, etc.): a psychoeducational or neuropsychological evaluation from a licensed psychologist, educational psychologist, or neuropsychologist
  • ADHD: documentation from a licensed psychologist, psychiatrist, or physician, including testing results and clinical findings
  • Physical or chronic health conditions: records from the treating physician or relevant specialist
  • Visual impairments: documentation from an ophthalmologist or optometrist
  • Hearing impairments: documentation from an audiologist or physician
  • Mental health conditions: records from a licensed mental health professional or physician

Your documentation needs to include the diagnosis, the severity, how the condition affects your test-taking ability, and a professional recommendation for specific accommodations. Outdated evaluations, particularly for learning disabilities and ADHD, may not be accepted. If your most recent evaluation is more than three to five years old, check the GMAT Supplement guidelines before assuming it will suffice.

Step 4: Submit Your Request

Submit your accommodation request through your mba.com account and upload all supporting documentation. Be explicit about what you are requesting. If your evaluating professional recommended a specific level of extended time (e.g., 100% extended time rather than just "extended time"), include that recommendation clearly in your submission.

If you have questions about the process or run into issues, contact GMAC's accommodations team directly at testingaccommodations@gmac.com.

Step 5: Wait for Review and Schedule After Approval

After submission, GMAC reviews your request and documentation. Processing times vary, but you should expect several weeks. Do not schedule your test date before your accommodations are approved.

If GMAC requests additional documentation or clarification, respond as quickly as possible. Every delay in your response extends the timeline.

If your request is approved, your accommodations are attached to your mba.com profile. You can then schedule your GMAT and your approved accommodations will be applied to your test session.

If your request is denied, GMAC provides an explanation. You can submit additional documentation or appeal.

GMAC and ETS Are Separate Processes

This is the single most important thing to understand if you are considering both tests. GMAC and ETS run completely independent accommodations processes. Approval for GRE accommodations through ETS does not mean you are automatically approved for GMAT accommodations through GMAC, and vice versa.

The documentation requirements differ. The review timelines differ. You need to apply separately to each organization if you plan to take both exams.

If you are deciding between the GRE and GMAT, factor in the accommodations timeline for whichever test you choose. If you want the option of taking both, start both accommodation processes early enough that approval for either one does not become a bottleneck.

Timeline to Plan Around

The GMAT Focus Edition is 2 hours and 15 minutes under standard conditions, plus one optional 10-minute break. With 50% extended time, plan for a test session of roughly 3 hours and 20 minutes. With 100% extended time, plan for approximately 4 hours and 30 minutes.

Working backward from a typical application deadline:

  • Deferred MBA programs with deadlines in the spring of your junior year often want scores by then or shortly before.
  • If your test is in March, you need to register by February at the latest.
  • Accommodations approval must come before that registration.
  • Submit your accommodation request at least eight to ten weeks before your intended registration date.
  • Documentation gathering takes time, especially if you need a new or updated evaluation.
  • Starting the process three to four months before your target test date gives you room for documentation collection, GMAC review, potential follow-up requests, and scheduling flexibility.

If you are aiming for earlier deadlines, move every step earlier. Do not assume the process will go quickly.

Practical Notes

Once accommodations are approved, they remain on your mba.com profile for subsequent GMAT attempts. You do not need to reapply each time, as long as your documentation is still current and your condition has not changed in a way that requires updated records.

Some accommodations, like a reader or recorder, are only available at a Pearson VUE test center. If your accommodations require in-person testing, check test center availability in your area before finalizing your timeline. Not all test centers may have capacity for accommodated sessions on your preferred dates.

The GMAT allows up to 5 attempts in a rolling 12-month period, with at least 16 days between attempts. Your accommodations apply to all attempts within that window.

What to Do Next

  1. Read the GMAT Supplement for Test Takers with Disabilities before doing anything else. It specifies exactly what GMAC needs from you.
  2. Create your mba.com account now, even if you are not ready to submit your accommodation request yet.
  3. Check whether your existing documentation meets GMAC's standards. If your evaluation is more than three to five years old, schedule a new evaluation as soon as possible.
  4. Submit your accommodation request at least eight to ten weeks before your intended test registration date. Earlier is better.
  5. After approval, schedule your GMAT and confirm that your accommodations appear in the registration flow.
  6. Plan your test day logistics around your actual testing duration, not the standard 2 hours and 15 minutes.

Starting Your Prep

Accommodations change your timing and test-day experience, but the content you need to prepare stays the same. The GMAT Focus Edition covers what the current test looks like and how it differs from the old format. Once your accommodations are in place and your test date is set, build your study plan around your target score and the time you have available.

The GRE course is $25 per month with a free diagnostic if you are weighing the GRE as an option. If you are not sure where to start or how accommodations fit into your broader application timeline, coaching can help you build a plan that accounts for testing, essays, and deadlines together.
